In this issue of the Newsletter, we both salute the success of the 1997 International Symposium on Information Theory and look ahead to the new year, in which we will celebrate the anniversary of the paper with which our field was born. In this spirit, I pass on a question that was posed to me at ISIT97. I hope that you will consider this question and share some of your insights by sending them to me at the address given below. The question was posed roughly as follows:

Where would our fields be today had Shannon and his work not existed?

So, would be science fiction writers, care to speculate?

Please help me to make the Newsletter as interesting and informative as possible by contributing suggestions, news, and articles. The deadlines for receiving material for the next few issues are as follows.
