Highlights of this issue include an article by Claude Berrou and Alain Glavieux reflecting on their IT Society Paper Award winning paper on turbo codes and an article by Gerhard Frey on his ISIT 1997 plenary lecture on the proof of Fermat's last theorem. Also in this issue we note the fine accomplishments of the newest members of our Society to be elected to the US National Academy of Engineering and mark the sad passing of Edward Assmus.

Please help me to make the Newsletter as interesting and informative as possible by contributing suggestions, news, and articles. The deadlines for receiving material for the next few issues are as follows.
