Dr. Reed is noted for his work in automatic detection and processing of radar data, multiple error-correcting communications codes (in particular, the Reed-Muller and Reed-Solomon codes) and the logical design of digital computers (developed first register-transfer-design language, RTL, for computers). Dr. Reed is a Fellow of the IEEE and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1979. He was the Shannon Lecturer at the 1982 International Symposium on Information Theory in Les Arcs, France, and received the 1985 Roy Carlton Award for Outstanding Paper entitled Adaptive Optical Target Detection Using Correlated Images (with A. Margalit and R. M. Gagliardi) published in the IEEE Transactions on AES . Dr. Reed received the 1986 USC School of Engineering Faculty Research Award and the IEEE's 1989 Richard W. Hamming Medal. That same year he received the Charles Babbage Outstanding Scientist Award, presented to him by the Orange County Chapter of the IEEE Computer Society. Dr. Reed received the California Institute of Technology distinguished Alumni Award for 1992. The 1995 Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award of the IEEE is to be awarded jointly to Dr. Reed and G. Solomon for their contributions to coding in modern digital processors. Dr. Reed also holds the title of Charles Lee Powell Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
