The 2022 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal has been awarded to Madhu Sudan, Gordon McKay Professor at Harvard University, and member of the IEEE Information Theory Society.

Madhu Sudan has made outstanding contributions to many different areas of computer science and information theory over his illustrious career of several decades. He was awarded this highest of distinctions for fundamental contributions to probabilistically checkable proofs and list decoding of Reed-Solomon codes.

Named after Richard Hamming, the medal is awarded annually to individuals or teams for exceptional contributions to information sciences, systems, and technology. Subject areas include information theory, coding theory, data communication, computer networks, data storage and retrieval, and image and speech understanding.
