Recipients of the 2024 IEEE Communication Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award: Justin Singh Kang and Wei Yu

The Joint Paper Award recognizes outstanding papers from the previous three calendar years that lie at the intersection of communications and information theory. It is determined by a joint awards committee. The recipients of the 2024 Award are Justin Singh Kang and Wei Yu for their paper "Minimum Feedback for Collision-Free Scheduling in Massive Random Access,” IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 67, no. 12, Dec. 2021.

 

Justin Singh KangJustin Singh Kang received the B.A.Sc. degree in engineering physics from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, in 2019, and the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, in 2021. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA.

 

Wei YuWei Yu received the B.A.Sc. degree in computer engineering and mathematics from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, U.S.A. He is currently a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, where he holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Information Theory and Wireless Communications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. Prof. Wei Yu was the President of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2021 and served on its Board of Governors in 2015-2023. He served as the Chair of the Signal Processing for Communications and Networking Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2017-2018. He was an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer in 2015-2016. Prof. Wei Yu received the Steacie Memorial Fellowship in 2015, the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications in 2019, the IEEE Communications Society Award for Advances in Communication in 2019, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award in 2008, 2017 and 2021, the Journal of Communications and Networks Best Paper Award in 2017, and the IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award in 2015. He was a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2023.
