Jun 9, 2009

The BBVA Foundation awards span eight scientific and artistic areas each with a cash prize of 400,000 Euros and are organized in partnership with Spain's National Research Council. The Information and Communication Technologies award is among these eight, and it honors outstanding research work and practical breakthroughs in this area, broadly interpreted. More information about the award, as well as information on submitting nominations for the second edition of the award, can be found at the award website ( http://www.fbbva.es/TLFU/premios/fronteras/en/index.html ).

The first award went to Jacob Ziv, who was nominated both by the IT Society and by the Technion, for his ground-breaking innovations in data compression (see Ziv Receives Frontiers of Knowledge Award ). Nominations must be made by professional societies, universities, or former award winners. The awards committee will decide about nominations through the society, but you might also forward this information to the appropriate people at your institutions who handle such nominations, which will help to ensure a large pool of worthy candidates.
